Browns Training Camp Log: Day 4

GET YOUR POPCORN: Every new coach has his way of doing things. An early wrinkle from Hue Jackson is that he’ll hold the preseason scrimmage Friday night from 6-8:30 at the team facility — a night before the annual Orange and Brown Scrimmage at Ohio State.
“Everybody’s talked about the scrimmage at Ohio State, right? Well, that’s really a mock game for our football team,” Jackson said. “Friday night will be the night that we kind of get after it here and really have a scrimmage-type setting. We’re going to put the ball down and play. It’d be like the siren’s going the whole time.”
The siren means tackling is allowed, which should be fun for fans who have tickets to the sold-out session.
As for Saturday in Columbus, it will be an up-tempo practice but not in pads. The team will simulate a game with a pregame warmup and halftime.
NEWS OF THE DAY: For the second straight day Jackson ended practice early. They were scheduled to run from 3-5:30 p.m. but wrapped up at 4:45.
“I have to have a pretty good feel for our football team and I kind of know when we’re at that point where it’s getting a little too much, and then you back off a little bit,” said Jackson, who added he listens to the strength and sports science staffs. “We’re a collaborative group and make sure our team stays as healthy as we can.”
** There was one siren period, and it featured all backups. Jackson said he wanted to develop the young players.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Tight end Connor Hamlett. With Pro Bowler Gary Barnidge held out of team drills after sports hernia surgery in June, the first-year player has taken advantage of the increased opportunities.
Hamlett caught a pair of touchdowns in a red zone drill, one down the seam, the other on a pass underneath. He also made a nice back-shoulder catch over a defensive back in a one-on-one drill.
PLAY OF THE DAY: The offense got a big win on the first play of the siren period. Running back Raheem Mostert ran off-guard left and burst through for a 35-yard gain. Outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo chased him down.
The script was flipped on the next play when safety Rahim Moore upended Mostert in the hole.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Everything is really a surprise at this point. It’s been, so far, unbelievable. You play against some of the best guys in the world and it’s fast, intense, so everything out there is just brand new. I’m just taking it all in.” – Rookie receiver Jordan Payton on his first training camp.
