Browns Training Camp Log: Day 5

HANG ON, YOU’RE SLOPPY: Coach Hue Jackson has a theme for his post-practice news conferences: turnovers. He mentions them just about every day.
“I don’t like the turnovers,” he said Tuesday. “We had a couple costly ones in some drills. It’s good that the defense is getting them. The offense, we have to protect the ball a little better.”
NEWS OF THE DAY: The siren sounded early, because Jackson wanted to send a jolt through practice. It worked, as the offense controlled the action at first and the defense fought back. The intensity stayed at a high level for much of the two-hour session.
“Obviously, I noticed we were a little dull so I wanted to get our football team going,” Jackson said. “That’s one way to do it. Just go play football. I think the guys appreciated it because the energy in practice started to change a little bit.”
** Center Cam Erving (elbow) and receiver Andrew Hawkins (hamstring) stopped practicing and had their injured body parts wrapped. Neither injury is believed to be too serious.
** Ousted Baylor coach Art Briles watched practice and talked with his former players – quarterback Robert Griffin III, rookie receiver Corey Coleman, receiver Josh Gordon and rookie offensive lineman Spencer Drango.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Coleman.
The No. 15 pick in April capped a strong drive by the No. 1 offense after the siren blew. He caught a short pass, cut on a dime and made a couple of guys miss for a touchdown. He later added a nice catch on a comeback on the sideline from Griffin.
PLAY OF THE DAY: No. 2 quarterback Josh McCown saw tight end Randall Telfer running down the right seam and lofted a pass for him near the goal line. Telfer appeared to be open, but the ball floated enough for safety Rahim Moore to step in front for an interception that drew congratulations from Jackson.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “There’s no shortage of speed for us at wide receiver and there won’t be. These guys are like a track team running up and down the field.” – Griffin.
TODAY’S SCHEDULE: Players have the day off. Practice resumes Thursday from 3:25-5:55 p.m.
