NFL Draft: Browns pick Memphis LB Genard Avery in 5th round

BEREA — The Browns selected Memphis linebacker Genard Avery (6-foot-0 1/2), 248 pounds) with pick No. 150 in the fifth round.

He totaled 233 tackles, 45.5 tackles for loss, 21.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and seven passes defensed at Memphis. He returned both his interceptions for touchdowns.

As a senior, he had 80 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.

Avery was a power lifter in high school in Grenada, Miss., winning two state titles and setting three state records. He dead lifted 580 pounds, squatted 605 and benched 360.


He ran a 4.59 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.

He wanted to attend Ole Miss but wasn’t offered a scholarship and wound up at Memphis.
