THE TIME IS NOW: The Browns made two significant moves before the preseason opener, shifting Joel Bitonio from left guard to left tackle and trading starting receiver Corey Coleman. Coach Hue Jackson said they can be viewed as a philosophical shift in the organization.
“I think that is the urgency, period — we want to win,” he said.
NEWS OF THE DAY: Jackson said rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield, the No. 1 pick in the draft, will play “quite a bit” Thursday in the preseason opener against the New York Giants. Jackson said the amount of time will depend on what happens in the game.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Cornerback Denzel Ward. In a dull practice, he gets the nod for one play and a solid all-around camp. He ran step for step with receiver Evan Berry, leaped and knocked the ball away in the end zone. Ward then demonstratively signaled incomplete.
PLAY OF THE DAY: Tyrod Taylor hit receiver Rashard Higgins for a 65-yard touchdown on a go route in 7-on-7 drills. Higgins continues to make plays.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I’ve got a great relationship with all the players, all my brothers that I’m out there playing against. Because we’re out there together fighting, trying to accomplish one goal, and that’s to win.” — Linebacker Jamie Collins.
