Coach Kevin Stefanski is close to completing his first coaching staff.
He will hire former defensive coordinator Jason Tarver as linebackers coach, a league source told The Chronicle-Telegram on Saturday.
And T.C. McCartney has been hired as an offensive assistant, a source confirmed. Cleveland.com was first to report the news.
Tarver spent the last two seasons as coordinator at Vanderbilt University. He also coached outside linebackers in 2018 and inside linebackers in 2019.
Tarver has 16 years of NFL experience, including as coordinator for the Raiders under coach Dennis Allen from 2012-14. He also was a co-coordinator at Stanford in 2011 under David Shaw.
New Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods was defensive backs coach for the Raiders in 2014 while Tarver was coordinator.
McCartney was fired as quarterbacks coach of the Denver Broncos after the season, his only one with the Broncos. He was a low-level assistant on coach Mike Pettine’s staff with the Browns in 2014.
McCartney is the son of former University of Colorado quarterback Sal Aunese and the grandson of former Colorado coach Bill McCartney.
News 5 will continue as the team’s flagship station for preseason games and year-round programming, as the station and team reached a long-term extension, the Browns announced.
The preseason games on News 5 last season averaged a 20.5 Nielsen rating in the region, sixth-highest among NFL markets.
