Training Camp Log, Day 6: Offense struggles in red zone as pads come on

RED MEANS STOP: The first padded practice was spent mainly in the red zone, and after the offense got off to a good start — and the defense did pushups — the defense won the day. In back-to-back four-play series in seven-on-seven, the first team didn’t complete a pass and quarterback Baker Mayfield expressed his frustration.

The donning of the pads also brought blitz-protection drills and line battles. Running back Kareem Hunt was looking forward to it.

“I really don’t like all this two-hand touch stuff,” he said.

NEWS OF THE DAY: Middle linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. will miss time — a “week-plus,” according to coach Kevin Stefanski — but won’t need surgery on the knee injured Monday.

Rookie weakside linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah practiced for the first time after going on the COVID list July 25. He was limited to individual drills.

CAMPER OF THE DAY: Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been in Mayfield’s face a lot through the first week of camp, and that continued. He got past first-team All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin and backup Greg Senat.

PLAY OF THE DAY: Linebacker Mack Wilson left his feet and pulled in the end zone interception of Mayfield. The pass was intended for tight end David Njoku over the middle.

QUOTES OF THE DAY: “That fires me up, bro. I asked him, like, ‘Hey, bro, how does it feel? What’s the first thing you’re going to do with your money?’ And I’m like, ‘You need to get your credit score up.’” — Receiver Rashard Higgins on running back Nick Chubb’s three-year, $36.6 million extension.

** “Yeah, I am glad we do not have to play him. I told AVP, ‘Let’s not run that play to the left again.’” — Stefanski after defensive end Myles Garrett chased down a Mayfield bootleg Monday. Alex Van Pelt is the offensive coordinator.

WEDNESDAY’S SCHEDULE: Practice is at 2:25 p.m. and open to fans.
