Dawand Jones active, doesn’t start, but plays

CLEVELAND — Rookie right tackle Dawand Jones was active but didn’t start today against the Steelers. He had been listed as questionable with a knee injury that sidelined him for last week’s game.

James Hudson III started at right tackle for the second straight week.

Jones replaced Hudson on the first third-and-long, indicating he’ll play in known passing situations. He’s a better pass protector than Hudson.

Pittsburgh outside linebacker T.J. Watt, the 2021 Defensive Player of the Year, lines up across from the right tackle most of the day.

Jones originally injured a shoulder Oct. 29 against the Seahawks and missed most of the second half. He played the next week against the Cardinals and finished the game despite sustaining a knee injury. He didn’t practice the following week and was inactive last week for the 33-31 win in Baltimore.

Watt has 10.5 sacks, 20 quarterback hits, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, including one he returned for a touchdown to beat the Browns in Pittsburgh in Week 2.

Geron Christian started at left tackle for the second straight week. Jedrick Wills Jr. is on injured reserve with a sprained knee.

Safety Juan Thornhill (calf) and receiver Marquise Goodwin (concussion) were ruled out Friday. Goodwin was hurt Nov. 5 vs. the Cardinals, and Thornhill left the Ravens game.

Veteran Rodney McLeod started in place of Thornhill.

Guard Michael Dunn (calf) joined Jones as the only Browns players listed as questionable. He’s also active.

He missed four games on IR before returning to practice Wednesday. He was a full participant and activated from IR on Saturday.

The other inactives are healthy rookies: defensive tackle Siaki Ika, defensive end Isaiah McGuire and offensive lineman Luke Wypler.

The Steelers ruled out defensive tackle Montravius Adams Sr. (ankle) and safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring) and Keanu Neal (rib) on Friday. Tight end Pat Freiermuth (hamstring) was activated from IR on Saturday and is active.
