CLEVELAND — It’s so easy to take Myles Garrett’s greatness for granted, the Browns are making it a routine.
On Sunday, Garrett once again delivered a performance for the ages, sacking Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson — a two-time NFL MVP — four times as the Cleveland defense combined to limit his impact to 10 rushing yards and 193 passing yards.
But it again wasn’t enough, as Cleveland’s offense wasted another stellar defensive performance, losing to Baltimore 23-16 at Huntington Bank Field.
Ravens 23, Browns 16: Shedeur Sanders struggles in debut, Myles Garrett’s 4 sacks wasted
“Yeah, it’s a little freaky,” defensive lineman Shelby Harris said of Garrett’s performance. “I’ve been blessed to play with some great edge rushers. I’ve been around Bradley Chubb, Von Miller, Khalil Mack and now Myles. So it’s crazy when you expect something like that, you know what I mean? It is expected for him to go out there and have these crazy games.
“He puts the work in throughout the week. He put the work in the offseason and that’s the most rewarding part. You put the work in the offseason, you start to see the rewards during the season. So good for him, but just the beginning.”
Garrett entered Week 11 with 11 sacks, including a five-sack performance against New England during a 32-13 loss Oct. 26. He’s piled up 10 sacks in his last three games and sits atop the NFL with 15 for the season.
Commentary: Blame Shedeur Sanders’ shaky debut on how organization handled QB situation
He matched Hall of Famer Richard Dent (1984) as the only players with 10 sacks over a three-game period. He’s the fourth person with at least four sacks in multiple games within a season.
He also was a big reason running back Derrick Henry was largely contained. While Henry finished with 103 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, 59 of those yards came on one play. Henry added 19 yards on two catches.
“It’s a blessing to have an opportunity to have five, four, however many it is,” Garrett said. “So I’m just grateful for that. Those guys were rushing their behinds off and we always talk about four rushers equaling one. I think we had a great day rushing the passer and we all want some plays back.”
For reference, the single-season sack record is 22.5 co-held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt. Strahan played all 16 games in 2001 and while Watt’s occurred on a 17-game schedule, he missed two with an injury.
Notes: Devin Bush gets pick-six, Carson Schwesinger good again as linebackers star
Garrett is just eight sacks shy of breaking the mark with seven games to play. He became the first player since the sack became an official stat in 1982 to have 12 in six straight seasons. Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor did it in five straight.
“He’s been doing that for as long as he’s been in the league, and that’s no surprise,” linebacker Devin Bush said. “It’s always a good day, it’s always a good game when Myles is dropping more than one sack. So, you know, I think we just got to help him. We got to get him there. And when I say get him there, I think we got to do everything we can to get him more wins.”
Garrett had three sacks in the first half, and each one of them throttled Jackson. His first came on third-and-goal from the 3-yard line. The Ravens rolled Jackson out right to avoid the pressure, but Garrett tracked him down for a 4-yard loss. Baltimore settled for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
His second was for a 9-yard loss and on the ensuing play Bush picked off Jackson for Cleveland’s only touchdown, giving the Browns a 13-3 lead.
His third sack came as Baltimore was trying to put together a two-minute drill at the end of the half, but instead Cleveland used a timeout with the Ravens in third-and-12. While the next play resulted in a 10-yard dump to tight end Isaiah Likely, Garrett pressured Jackson into the checkdown.
Garrett’s final sack ended Baltimore’s opening drive of the second half. Jackson rolled right, had time to make a throw, but Garrett closed the window for a 2-yard loss on third-and-3.
In the end, it again wasn’t enough as the Browns fell to 2-8.
“Just thinking about it, thinking about the things I could have done, not going to put it on anything other than myself,” said Garrett, pointing to forcing turnovers. “First thing I do is look in the mirror. Now I got four (opportunities) on Lamar, didn’t get the ball out. Got a hit on Henry right as soon as he got the handoff. I got to make bigger plays.”
