BEREA — Denzel Boston carried his strong performance in the offseason program into training camp.
The rookie receiver has made at least one memorable catch in each of the first four practices. On Saturday, he made a contested catch over cornerback Tre Avery on a deep fade down the right sideline from Shedeur Sanders.

Boston was the No. 39 pick in April. Fellow receiver KC Concepcion, the No. 24 pick, is also off to a solid start.
“I think KC and Boston have been doing a heck of a job picking up the offense, being able to learn from the veteran receivers in the room — but just making plays,” quarterback Deshaun Watson said. “I think just being able to see them come out here and go up for balls, making contested catches, has been really good. I think they’re going to be very productive and helpful for this offense.”
The receiving corps was a weakness last season, and general manager Andrew Berry sought to correct it by picking a wideout before the third round for the first time in his seven drafts.
“I’m super excited for them,” Sanders said. “Overall, I’m really happy that they’re here, and all the decision-makers made the decision to bring them here, because they’ve definitely held up their end, and they’re definitely a part of the standard we have here.
“It’s exciting being able to see young guys come in and have daily success, and that success daily is going to add up over time.”
Boston has great size at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds but has also impressed with the ability to get open. He got separation from starting cornerback Tyson Campbell on a comeback route Saturday for a completion, something he also did in the spring.
FIGHT TIME
The pads will come on for the first time Monday, but that didn’t stop a scuffle from breaking out during practice.
Defensive tackle Sam Kamara and offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins appeared to be the first to mix it up after a play, then offensive lineman KT Leveston pushed defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. in the back and players from both units swooped in. Defensive end Alex Wright was swinging in the scrum and continued to jaw at the offensive linemen after the period.
Tight end Brenden Bates and linebacker Quincy Williams kept their heads and threw fake punches at each other on the outside of the circle.
The defense had a string of three straight “sacks” after the fight.
TAKE YOUR PICK
The defense had five interceptions in its most productive day of camp.
Safety Christopher Edmonds had the bookends.
He grabbed a Watson pass early when tight end Jack Stoll couldn’t corral a pass. Rookie safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren made a nice play knocking the ball into the air, and Edmonds returned it for a touchdown.
His second pick ended practice.
In a two-minute drill, Watson had moved the offense to the 21-yard line, but overthrew receiver Tylan Wallace and Edmonds was waiting.
Safety Donovan McMillion got Watson earlier in a red zone drill. Watson hesitated to throw, then Edmonds made the play in front of rookie tight end Carsen Ryan in the end zone.
** Sanders was intercepted by cornerback D’Angelo Ross in his turn in the two-minute drill. Sanders threw a fade to Jerry Jeudy, and Ross won the jump ball.
** No. 3 quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a good day but couldn’t escape unscathed. Under pressure in the red zone, he threw falling away and undrafted rookie linebacker Reid Carrico was waiting near the goal line.
INJURY REPORT
Linebacker Carson Schwesinger, the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, didn’t practice with an undisclosed injury but watched.
** Receiver Jamari Thrash, offensive lineman Teven Jenkins and defensive tackle Kalia Davis weren’t on the field. Leveston remained the first-team right guard with Jenkins out.
** Tight end Harold Fannin Jr. was back after missing a day for a personal reason.
** Nickelback Myles Harden practiced after leaving late in Friday’s session.
EXTRA POINTS
Rookie third-round pick Austin Barber has gotten time at right tackle with the first-team offense the last couple of days. Veteran Tytus Howard is expected to be the starter.
** Andre Szmyt went 4-for-5 in a field goal drill.
** The players have their first off day of camp Sunday. Practice resumes Monday but is closed to the public.
The next day off is next Sunday.
