CLEVELAND — The Browns will be without starting cornerback Tyson Campbell today for the home opener vs. the Carolina Panthers.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Campbell had been listed as questionable with ankle and hip injuries after being limited in practice all week.
He worked out before the game but was deemed not ready.
Home opener another pivotal test for Deshaun Watson after ‘best week’ of practice
The Browns will host the Steelers on Thursday night, so the team may have been leery about two games in five days.
Campbell will likely be replaced by Mekhi Blackmon in the starting lineup. He filled in late when Campbell exited last week’s win over the Buccaneers after an awkward fall in the end zone after leaping to try to break up a pass.
Blackmon was a third-round pick of the Vikings in 2023. He’s started 14 of 34 games. The Browns claimed him off waivers Aug. 27.
The Panthers have the NFL’s No. 1 passing offense, averaging 312.5 yards per game in their 1-1 start. Receivers Tetairoa McMillan (10 catches, 176 yards) and Jalen Coker (16 catches, 204 yards, two touchdowns) are off to great starts.
Safety Grant Delpit (shoulder) is active and will start after being listed as questionable. He was limited in practice all week but said Friday he was good enough to play.
